Solar Car Races World Solar Challenge Australia The World Solar Challenge is a solar-powered car race which covers 3010 km (1,877 miles) through Australia from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south. The challenge: design and build a car capable of crossing the vast and imposing continent of Australia using only sunlight as fuel and to prove it, in the spirit of friendly competition against others with the same goal. In 2007 the Dutch Nuon Solar Team has won the World Solar Challenge for the fourth time with the solar race car Nuna 4 of Delft Next Solar Challenge: October 18-25, 2009

North American Solar Challenge The North American Solar Challenge is a competition to design, build, and drive solar-powered cars in a cross-country time/distance rally event. Teams compete in a 2400 mile drive from Dallas, U.S.A. to Calgary, Canada. In 2005 the University of Michigan 's has won the North American Solar Challenge. The solar race car Momentum made the trip from Austin to Calgary in a cumulative time of 53 hours, 59 minutes and 43 seconds, for an average speed of 46.2 mph.
