ROYAL TICHELAAR - MILAN 2003

Royal Tichelaar

Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the oldest company in the Netherlands (founded in 1594) is working together with three prominent Dutch Designers. Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius and Marcel Wanders have been asked to produce designs using the craftsmanship of the hand painters. Independently, all three of them came up with the idea of applying the authentic Majolica technique in their designs. The result is a blend of an ancient tradition in pottery and contemporary design.

Jurgen Bey

Jurgen Bey translated the time-consuming manual element that characterizes craftsmanship into various methods of decorating. By using ingenious moulds, relief and printing techniques he created a foundation onto which hand painting can be added. His initiative for an entire set (a long term plan) will reflect the various technical possibilities of the company.

Hella Jongerius

Hella Jongerius took a depiction of a sailing ship she found in the factories old décor books and copied it onto a soup bowl. The same décor is spread over the nine matching soup cups as well as the ladle. Three versions of the series will be sold; some will be hand painted a little, others half and the remainder will be almost entirely hand painted.
